Facts About DI Water

What are the other names given to Deionised Water?

Deionized Water, Demineralised Water, Purified Water, DI Water, De-ionized Water, De-ionised Water

Why is it necessary to use Deionised Water?

Pure water is essential in different applications like laboratory experiments, cosmetics, electronics manufacturing, food processing, metallurgy, and other industrial processes. Impurities in water may cause interference which may cause undesirable results.
Water contaminated with ions ie: calcium, magnesium, iron, salts or other ions is also more electrically conducive and may not be suitable for some applications.

Some typical uses for Deionised Water:

  • After sales battery top-up maintenance – the impurities found in regular water decrease the batteries lifespan significantly.
  • Solar System battery water – Preferred water type for topping up Solar System Batteries (deep cycle batteries)
  • Engine’s coolant system – the presence of ions and salts in water can be highly corrosive – use it to dilute with the coolant
  • Window washing – Cars, homeowners & buildings glass. Window washers love to use the water to rinse after washing as it prevents the appearance of spots when dry.
  • All types of steamers – facial steamers, irons, kettles, humidifiers etc. It prevents scale build-up and furring
  • Pressure cleaners – deionised water has no ions and minerals and thus easily finds sources to replenish them, making it an effective cleaner on many surfaces including cars and buildings
  • Ultrasonic cleaning tanks – deionised water is extremely active cleaner and will pull ions from any surrounding metal, including stainless steel. As deionised water contains no ions of its own, it will always look to draw from its immediate surroundings and even the atmosphere.

Can I use tap water or mineral water instead of Deionised Water?

Active ions and minerals in tap water causes scale build up, inaccurate readings of lab equipment, contamination of finished products and shortened shelf life of organic items, not to mention down time, cost of part replacement or complete machine replacements.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Deionised Water ?

It is simply water that has had most of the mineral content and dissolved ion content removed, and it is pure water. Deionisation removes minerals and ions, both cations (positively charged ions) and anions (negatively charged ions). Deionisation uses specially manufactured ion-exchange resins which exchange hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions for dissolved minerals, which are then recombined to form water. Tap water is usually contaminated with different ions from the soil, pipes, or other sources. Some of these common ions include calcium, sodium, copper, iron, chloride, and bromide.

I use distilled water, can I use Deionised Water

Yes, deionised water is free from all impurities and suitable for all uses where distilled water was used although it may be corrosive if it has extended contact with certain metals.

What is the difference between Reverse Osmosis Vs Deionised Water?

DI water quality is better – it has lower TDS (total dissolved solids) than the RO. Reverse osmosis TDS is typically around 20 ppm and deionised water is 0 or very close to zero (low TDS is a critical factor especially for battery manufacture)

Using an RO system and placing a deionising filter system after it to polish the water properly, will greatly improve the waters purity and suitability. Water going from the RO into a Deionised water system will also greatly extend the DI resins service life thus reducing costs.

Should I use Deionised or Reverse Osmosis water?

Choosing between RO and DI depends on several factors like:

  • Incoming raw water analysis
  • The quality of water you need to produce
  • Your costs like water and sewerage

Generally speaking, water with a TDS of less than 500 mg/L g means costs for a DI system are lower than the operating costs for an RO system.

Do we deliver

Unfortunately not. All water supplied must be collected for our facility at: 24 Anderson S Road, Joostenberg Vlakte, Cape Town, 7570′

What is reverse osmosis water?

When water with different concentrations of dissolved matter in the water (the solute) are separated by a semipermeable membrane, the water has a tendency to move from low to high solute concentrations for chemical potential equilibrium.

Reverse osmosis is the process of forcing water from a region of high solute concentration through a semipermeable membrane to a region of low solute concentration by applying a pressure in excess of the osmotic pressure. The most important application of reverse osmosis is the separation of pure water.

Can I bring my own drums

Yes – deliver your drums for cleaning, sterilising and filling and then collect. Containers are washed and rinsed by us, but we cannot be held liable for any contamination due to the reuse of used drums. We reserve the right to refuse any container unsuitable for re-use. Suitable containers are PET and HDPE plastic drums in any size.

What are Ions

An ion is an atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom or molecule a net positive or negative electrical charge.

What is the difference between Organic and Inorganic

Organic relates to or is derived from having properties characteristic of living organisms (fruits, vegetables etc.)
Inorganic Lacks the properties characteristic of living organisms (eg: rocks, metals, etc.)
